What if…?

My baby cries straight away.

Pause and pick them up for a cuddle. Next time, try a shorter tummy-to-tummy moment on your chest while you are fully awake. If they seem in pain, ask their clinician.

They do not look at the card.

Try your face instead. The picture is optional; your little one can look around and hear you talk without it. Yawning, turning away, or fussing can mean they need a break.

They always turn to the same side.

Mention a persistent preference to their clinician, especially if turning the other way seems difficult. Do not force their head around to follow a picture.

When to ask your baby’s clinician

Ask their clinician if your baby seems in pain, struggles to turn their head, or consistently favors one side.

If your baby was premature or has a medical condition, ask about a comfortable starting position and timing.
