Before
Have everything ready
Wash your hands and gather a clean diaper and water or fragrance-free, alcohol-free wipes. Keep supplies within your reach, away from little hands.
A changing mat on the floor avoids a fall from a table. On a raised surface, keep one hand on your baby and never leave them, even for a moment.
During
Let them hear your voice
“Let’s get you into a clean diaper.” Keep chatting or sing a familiar song as you clean gently.
If wiping seems to hurt, try gentle cleaning with water rather than rubbing. Check for irritated skin, and pause for a cuddle if your baby needs one.
After
Get comfortable again
Settle your baby somewhere safe, then wash your hands. There’s time for another cuddle once you’re done.
What if they still seem uncomfortable?
Call your baby’s clinician about a painful or worsening rash, sores, poor feeding, or unusual crying that continues after the change.
Get urgent medical help if your baby has trouble breathing, is difficult to wake, or seems very unwell.
