The number parents hear
Why people say 8 to 12 inches
Eight to 12 inches is about the space between your faces during a feeding. That is why the number comes up so often.
It is not a cutoff. Your baby can notice things farther away, especially when they are large or have strong contrast.
What it may look like
Your face comes through before the tiny details
Your baby’s view is still softly focused. The outline of your face, the movement of your mouth, and the contrast between your hair and skin may stand out before smaller details do.
Some days your baby may stare. Other days they may glance and turn away. Hunger, sleepiness, and lighting can all change how long they look.
Try it together
A quiet moment is enough
- When your baby is quietly awake, bring your face or one simple card close and give them a few seconds.
- There is no need to keep moving it. If your baby looks away, the moment can end.
If something worries you
Trust what you notice
A card cannot test your baby’s eyesight. If your baby rarely looks at faces, one eye seems different, or you are simply worried, tell their clinician.
